The Father. Historical, psychological and cultural perspectives
This work is a preface to the book, which deals with important, but
understudied problem: father image. Jungian analyst well-known in Russia
explores the child’s expectations from the father, the social importance
of the relationship between father and son. Without denying the general
reduction of patriarchal attitudes the author underlines, that the
expectation from the father to be powerful towards the world is an
archetypically important factor of psychological life. The notion of
father paradox is introduced, which means the evaluation of the father
not only in the context of the relations with the son, but in his
relationship with the world, his will-to-win spirit. The stress is laid
on the difference between conscious social values and archetypal wants,
which can be the reason for both public and personal conflicts. As
opposed to mother, which can unconsciously assume her role after the
birth of the child, father’s formation is always a conscious act of
volition, meeting with the child and taking of the responsibility for
him.
Key words and expressions: father, power, father rejection, child’s
expectations, weak father, winner, father paradox, personal, collective.
